To me the medallic art on this medal is just awesome. One side shows the Belgium greater coat of arms that was adopted in March 1837. It appears that Mr Fisch modified it to his version from what I was able to find and compare with..( 3rd picture is of the Belgium Coat Of Arms to compare with)

The other side is what I am not sure what all this represents....There is a black smith with his tools of the trade, I believe the lady is an artist as it appears she is holding an artist board with paint brushes..There is an ewer sitting on top of a pillar...and other objects..

From what I have been able to find oline of award medals is that there is always the description and explanation such as " international exposition " etc explaining what the medal is about..This one by A. Fisch is totally void of that..

Medal is 49mm and weight is 37.2 grams and feels like German white metal.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what this is and what the different items mean are appreciated..TIA

Looks like a Minerva figure next to the blacksmith to me. That's only a guess.

I did a search on Antoine Fisch, b.1827, but came up empty handed for any hits specific to your medal.

Thanks CheetahCats.....I think you are right.. The following description is what I found online.

Minerva was the goddess of wisdom, war, art, schools and commerce.

The only information I have been able to find about A. Fisch is: Belgian Medallic Artist - Antoine Fisch ( 1827 -- 1892 )

As you pointed out there is very little about his work..

I saw only yesterday your 1874 medal of Antoine Fisch .
on one side there are the arms of Belgium , represented in 19° century style , with the arms of the 9 Belgian provinces and the maxim : l'union fait la force .He used this side in a lot of medals .
On the other side : a lady , an allegory for Art with a painterspalet in her hand shakes hands with a man , a blachsmith as allegory for Industry ,next to him is an anvil and material to work , in the background the product of his work .Fisch used this side alsoo more than once .
I couldn t find the destination of this medal .
For more work of him : the library of the university of Ghent : http://www.adore.ugent.be ,choise the english version and give the name of Antoine Fisch . There you will find one side in an other version .
For a lot more medals :the Penningkabinet in Brussels : http://www.kbr.be ,then the language , french is the easiest I think , then colections , then at left : monnaies et médailles , then médailles belges under the pic of the child , then : chercer dans le catalogue en ligne , then : third line type d'object , you write : médaille and by artiste : Fisch Antoine , if all goes well , you will find 278 medals .
I hope this will give you a better vieuw of this artist
