Here is an interesting new offer from our friends in Beijing.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Mexico-1775-4-R...EF_W0QQitemZ290032655254

The 4R has a Philippines counterstamp only without the name of the King.

The host is also fake - note the streaky artificial toning at the top of the coin in front of the King's head. Also look at the inner circle formed by the dentils - it is circular on 99% of originals but there is a pronounced dip in the dentils two segments before the D in DEI and there are several irregular spacings that seem inappropriate here. Finally the whole thing looks a bit fuzzy to me and I don't think it is a simple function of focus but points to a cast copy.

You never cease to fascinate me, you should write a book and I'll be the first to buy it, I'm serious!

Great find! I know very little about coins of this era and enjoy learning more and more about them! Thanks again!

The final price was $66 including shipping, but that is roughly twice to three times the maximum value I would attach to the coin.

Oh well, I hope they didn't use the rent money.

Great info. I'd buy a copy of that book, as well.
