Ran across one of the nicest Athenian Owls tonight that I have seen on ebay in quite some time. Nice metal, nice strike, good detail, very little strike splitting, and no banker marks or test cuts. Was hard to resist........

Educate yourself on excellent counterfeits of these coins on the I.B.S.C.C. (International Bureau for the Suppression of Counterfeit Coins) website.

There are a great many of excellent forgeries around of this famous coin.

Buy only from a dealer of highest repute, and keep all of the purchase information to be able to prove provenance if you have to sell years later.

I bought mine from Spink's in London in 1977.

They are a pleasing coin to have, if it is a good one.

I agree completely. Have seen many fakes over the years. This particular piece comes from Mike Vosper, so no worries there. I have handled several hundred of these in the past three or four decades, not something that is unfamiliar to me by any means. Great classic design that seems to be getting harder and harder to find in good material.
