It looks like someone tried to punch a hole in it, but it didn't go all the way. That mark certainly isn't from normal wear. Welcome to the forums! :-)

Yes, this does appear to be an attempt to punch a hole in the coin. Oftentimes, back in the 1800's, it was considered good luck to nail a penny into some new construction like a house. This was typically done with a copper large cent which are often seen bearing holes. The Flying Eagle cent, containing a mix of copper and much harder nickel composition is far more resistant to being holed. Typically, holed coins were intended to be attached to something. It looks like the coin pictured was intended as such, but the effort proved too difficult at the time.

Over the years, I've encountered a number of collectors who actively seek holed coins. Often, they want to obtain a type set of holed coins; easy on the pocketbook as these are. At a show I attended this past weekend, one dealer showed me a binder, containing 60-80 holed coins. I suspect that holed Flying Eagle cents are a scarcer commodity, what with the copper, silver and gold coins being far less resistive to puncture. Whoever owns that pictured coin might then better finish the job started, whiz it and put it on a key chain ...

Looks like a Large Letter Variety 1858, that'll bump up the price a little bit.
