I think this might have been a good buy. Thoughts?

The price is right since these can push $1,000 in 45. I don't like the gouge in the cheek and the reverse has some hairlines but it's still a decent deal for the buyer. 1834 gold is the earliest date US. gold is available at a reasonable price so there's a lot to like here.

P.S. The ICG holder is mislabeled. That's a classic head, not the far more expensive 1834 Capped Bust.

I would be quite happy at that price. Looks like a pleasing coin to take to residence in my collection.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, nice coin by the way, but is ICG a respected TPG? This is the only time I've seen them slab a coin.

ICG is a legitimate grading company but they do not get the respect in the market that NGC and PCGS garner.

On this coin in particular even if it was net graded to EF40, it's still a good buy.

I was watching that one close. Kind of thought it would go higher and that the final price was a pretty good deal. I need a classic quarter eagle so I watch many of the classic auctions. There aren't too many.

Thanks for the input! I do have a type ANACS VF-35 example, but this one seemed like a great deal to me, as I paid the same for the other. I actually really like the surfaces, color and remaining luster for the grade on this one. These are often heavily abraded and show little luster even into the AU grades. The only thing that bothers me(and is particular to the 1834), is the weakness in hair detail on liberty's forehead. My VF-35 1837 has better hair detail than this one(though the rest of the detail especially on the reverse is overall weaker). Anyways I think this one might be worth trying to cross. I'll get some better pics when it arrives.
