Hey everyone! Just purchased my first two Dansco albums ( Jefferson nickels and Lincoln Memorial Cents) from ValleyCoin. I can't wait until they arrive so I can put what coins I have from spare change in them. As a coin collecting newbie, I was wondering what grade of coins at a minimum I should put in the albums? I am going to try to get the main Red Book as well as the Jefferson nickel and Lincoln Cent individual Red Books as well so I can learn more about grading. Thanks!

I would place whatever coin I found and then upgrade as they come.
That's what I do with all my collections. If I'm buying coins I sometimes set standards,
like fine or better but it depends on the set and rarity of the coin. I like to have a mix
of grades in my collection and generally speaking am not that picky. Got to have a few BU's mixed in though.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Not another Dansco person! Please, isn't there any Whitman people left on Earth?
As to what to put in those (things), it sort of depends on your ability to either find in change or purchase coins. If your limited to a budget, then just put in what ever you can afford. There are lots of coins in circulation that would go right in those. Always remember it is up to you what you like, want, can afford. This is supposed to be a hobby for FUN so don't get carried away trying to do something that might make you loose interest. And buying books on the coins you want to collect really will help you find and know what to look for too.
Also,
If you decide to just collect coins from change, you might want to start asking friends, relatives, neighbors if they have any old coins just laying around. Also, if there are any flea markets, try those for coins too.
And always remember that there are Whitman Albums out there tooooooo.

Whatever makes you happy!

As previously stated, you can upgrade as better ones come along. However, I try to find the best I can and leave it at that. I have avoided playing upgrade games with my albums because I become sentimentally attached to each and every coin.

I like the look of a circulated coin, but I still want enough detail to have nice eye appeal. So to answer the "what grade" question, go with your gut. What looks good to your eyes? Remember, these are your coins for your enjoyment.

My final piece of advice is to search, sort, and collect as many dates as possible before putting them in the album. That way you can upgrade the coins you have sorted and not necessarily a coin in the album. Then put them all into the album at one time. Once you have your base set of coins, you will have an idea of the look you want. As new coins are found in change, you should be able to see if it is a fit or not. That is, wait to find one that fits (but keep the other finds aside, just in case).
