Can anyone enlighten me on this one...? Def a mint damage? What would cause this? I have other 1982s that are fine and smooth.
Is this a known error? First coin I have ever seen like this...

Zinc rot bubbles and maybe even a few gas bubbles. Most likely zinc rot though. Just a normal coin.

In 1982, the mint switched from copper planchets to zinc planchets plated in copper. They also had a design change creating large and small date varieties. Yours is a large date. Weight should be 3.11 grams for copper planchets and 2.56 grams for zinc planchets, though most of the time you can tell by looking at them.

The first several years they had real issues trying to get the copper plating to adhere to the zinc core properly. It's difficult to find early to mid '80's examples without these issues - if you do, they're keepers and will be highly sought after one day (IMO).

These gas bubbles pop and expose the underlying zinc which does not get along with the environment very well. The mortality rate of early "zincolns" will be very high.
