Is the black spot toning or environmental damage. It didnt look quite as bad to me on the dealer site (they never do!). Curious if I should send this one back..

I love the color/detail/mint mark of the coin.. But this one wasnt cheap.. So I want to make sure it's REALLY the right one. :)

If the consensus is toning, then I'll keep it. Environmental damage.. I would think I overpaid quite a bit for it.

I would say environmental damage. I have an 1864L S-3 IHC that I sent to NGC and it came back as details because of a black streak on the obverse. It looks similar to yours.

I lean towards Environmental Damage, but easy EF details. This is one I suspect to be worth more raw than slabbed; to my eyes, it doesn't deserve the stigma of a "Details" slab.

EF40, and there's one rather similar currently being offered on ebay for $185 shipped. I'd call that about $35 overpriced, and yours in the same range.

This might be a candidate for acetone, just in case the black stuff is organic. The only "if" is that, if it does remove the black, the underlying surface would probably be a bright patch compared to the surrounding, more-aged surface.
Rest in Peace

hmm...it sure doesn't look like damage to me. Usually environmental damage affects the surface of the coin(making it porous or rugged), and this one looks unaffected to my eyes. I personally would call it problem free and I'd grade it XF-45 due to remaining luster.

Because of the head detail and lack of wear on the legs, I'd actually go all the way up to Au- for detail. It's a weakly struck coin though, and I don't think it would net to AU or something, but for an 'XF' price its not bad. Is that the actual color?

If that's the first place your eye goes whenever you look at it and it bugs you, then consider a return either way. Very nice otherwise, but I've found if I'm not perfectly happy with a coin at first sight, what bugs me then will always bug me. It goes back to mdh157's "are you happy with it?"

It's really close to the actual color.. Maybe slightly more brown and less golden on the obverse.. but the reverse is pretty close.
