I saw this set recently and I must say I really like the bird designs on the reverse. Internet searches don't come up with much info on the British Virgin Islands sets so I don't know much about them. Can anyone here give me some more information about these coins? What is their composition? How much is the set worth really? It was being sold for 30$ and I liked the designed enough to seriously consider buying it.

Thoughts?

There were sterling silver sets in 1977, for the Silver Jubilee, and in 1978, for the Coronation Jubilee, otherwise all bird-design BVI coins are cupro-nickel.

I managed to buy one of these four years ago for $20 and my Krause from 2005 gives $20 as issuers price and $16,50 as market value. But the price will undoubtedly have gone up since given the rising price of silver, as the dollar coin in proof sets is 92,5 fine and weighs 25,7 grams.

Note that the 1 cent is made of bronze, not cupronickel.

If buying these sets in original packaging, take care that the coins are not too badly damaged. These are Franklin Mint sets and the packaging material they used in those days was pretty noxious to coins. Many people, who did what the Franklin Mint told them to do and remove the coins from the blister pack they originally came in, now own ruined coins.

I might add that neither the previous owner nor I have removed the coins from the blister pack and that they still look very nice.

Unfortunately the above reply of svslav, pillar of the community, is incorrect and I am unable to email him because I am a new member, and this site does not allow new members to email for fear of spam. Please mail him and tell him that the $1 Frigate Bird in the 1974 BVI Proof set is indeed Sterling Silver. Thanks
