There's a story (old news) and a picture (new news!) of the upcoming plastic bills on the star website, here: http://www.moneyville.ca/article/95...0s-to-follow

I'm looking forward to them!

The last statement says that they won't show the new bills so that counterfeiters don't have a head-start. I ask, is that really necessary? It's not like they can feel the bill in hand. The counterfeits will be amazing once enough time has gone by, so a head-start is really worse for criminals since they don't have any real solid reference. The last series of bills was as easy as scanning and printing (this is known by the fact that the fakes were released almost as fast as the real ones, only moments after). Honestly, I don't know why you can't just put UPCs on banknotes so you can scan any bills like coupons for authenticity.

Does Australia get lots of counterfeits at all? I know that in Mexico there are people who make counterfeits but only of the $500 peso note (which is still cotton if you can wrap your head around that one). They were introduced there to stop the faking of small bills which hurt local economies a lot. I know it works there because the countefeits are terrible and new computers cost pretty much double as in Canada.

counterfeits in Australia: since the polymers were introduced - very few.
Last year some dud $50 were passed.
I didn't see them myself, but someone who did, told me that one would have to be severely impaired to be fooled by it.
The trick is the transparent window, plus the little "indexing" image.

I heard the $100 will be the first cdn polymer, followed by the $10 and $5, with the $50 and $20 last since these are the notes dispensed by the automated bank machines (gives them more time to sort out the bugs)

If you turn the image on that website upside-down you can read "Australia" in cursive. Ozzies are probably having a nice laugh over this.
