I recently saw this 1798 dollar for sale by a private owner. They say it was inherited and they don't know anything about coins. These are not my pictures. I can arrange to see it in person but don't want to waste a long drive if it is probably a replica. The holder makes me suspicious that it is not authentic - but I'm an amateur. Any opinions would be appreciated.
I would think that you will need more information and better pics to determine authenticity. Did they say a price? Would they guarantee it? Say you send it to a grading company(PCGS for example). I would be suspicious. This could be a very valuable coin. We're talking thousands. How far away are we talking here?
This example has the large eagle and 15 stars. I do not believe that combination exists - my research indicates that only one 1798 variety had 15 stars, and it was a Small Eagle design.
Thanks so much for your responses. It looked suspicious and you've confirmed that. No price - no guarantee - and an hour drive to see it. I'll pass on this one!
