Hello Everyone,

I am a children's book writer, currently working on a book about coins. Can anyone offer any information or sources for interesting or rare uses for coins? Have you ever heard of coins being used in a very creative or quirky way?

For example, I've gathered some information on a man who actually made a jacket out of coins. I know this may seem a bit strange; but, I imagine avid coin collectors are probably the best source.

Looking forward to any interesting insight you might be able to provide!
Thanks!

Coin stories that always fascinate kids are buried treasure stories.

In the old neighborhood where I grew up in central MA. there are still stories of Tory Gold buried in the hills around the reservoirs. One of the streets is even named Old Tory Fort Rd.

I used to make about $9 to $20 bucks at the farm every year. My stepdad would replace blown fuses with two quarters. So, I would spend two bucks on a couple boxes of fuses...and pocket the quarters.

Probably not children's book material...sorry.

If you have the time just look at the post about Oddest Things you've Done to Coins. It is a little way down in this forums page. It is about 10 pages of STUFF.

Hi Carl! An easy way to make the link... first go to the topic you wanna make a link to... copy it from the top of your screen (browser)... (left click on it/turns blue, rite click on it and select copy from the drop down list), then paste it (rite click and select paste from the drop down list) where desired.

Might sound dumb but have you considered making such a book on the right ways to use coinage? I mean what your now getting is a lot of odd things and those may inspire some kids to follow those type of things to do with ocins.
By a real what coins are good for you could write things like gum ball machines, toll boths, stores, newspaper dispensers, all sorts of vending machines and on and on and on. Yes it would be boring but imagine kids reading about placing coins on RR tracks and one getting killed doing that. Sort of on the pessimistic side with this one.
Yet if you do make such a book, let us all know and you might get a lot of copies sold here.

I'm not gonna let this go Carl... old age indeed . If you can copy and paste... and indeed you can... you can post a link . Simply copy and paste the browser line as the link. The very top line of nonsensical looking text on the topmost portion of your screen. That's like the I.D. of the page you are viewing. Rite now, it looks something like;

CC http : // www . coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=83290&

If you copy and paste this entire line elsewhere, it will link you back here.

As a copy and paste link, it looks like;
https://goccf.com/t/83290

It didn't become a link as first listed above because I purposely put some spaces where they ought not to be, so the entire line would display, without turning into a link.

>>> edit>>> edited because I messed up... a little. Oookay, that oughta do it.

I have seen silver dollars used to decorate a Christmas tree , the coins were Bright shiney with some kind of metal ring holder around the coins edge and hook on top to hang the silver dollars it looked awesome.It was a" tree made from money " as in the old saying money does not grow on trees.

jewelry seems to be a big one, pendants the biggest example

good luck charms

Used to invite good luck, as in placing good luck coins in the concrete base of a new house, or for wishes to come true like a coin thrown in a wishing well
