I, like a lot of you, search pennies to a point where its almost unhealthy. I wake up in cold sweats screaming "NO! All the copper and die varieties are gone from circulation!!" Okay, maybe its not that bad, but its close.
I have always wondered how many people in my area also search so I've come up with a plan and I want opinions if you think I'll get any response.
Kind of based on the message in a bottle idea, I have about $150 in pennies to return to the bank. I was thinking of slipping a note in each roll with my email asking who found the roll, where they got it, and why did they pick it up. There are a ton of banks I go to for personal, business and hoarding reasons. I want to return $5 to each one and see what happens.
Just a random thought and I'm trying to refuel my drive to keep searching.
Any thoughts?
I was also thinking if there are any others out there who want to join we can setup a generic email to share and post the responses here on the forum. I'd be more than happy to handle the incoming messages and post the responses.

I personally like the idea for a few reasons. Not only can you find other collectors in the area (none of my friends or family have taken a liking to it the way I have) and become friends and trade with them, but it can keep you and others from wasting time searching through rolls of coins that someone has already looked through. Which is why I like Fed wrapped rolls compared to customer wrapped rolls

Interesting idea wolverine. Rkrj-one point-just because a roll has been looked through doesn't mean the looker was searching for the same thing you are. They may have only searched for wheaties, coppers, shiny reds or foreign. I guess most like myself check everything including varieties when we search, but some don't. Kinda like when I'm metal detecting and follow someone with poor technique. I love pulling something up after they have missed it.

If you would like to join me in my quest for finding collectors, tracking your rolls and just have some coin related fun PM me and can get the ball rolling. I'll make up a pdf file to send to you to print with the email, message and questions. Then you will just have to cut and insert it into your rolls!

Rolls just aren't for us, you know Many businesses pick up rolled up cents from the bank. If they get one (or more) with a note in it and their cashiers have trouble doing that break-the-roll-on-the-side-of-the-tray thing to empty the roll quickly, they are *not* going to be happy. Even if they don't do that, they may get a little freaked out. Maybe a small note on the outside? "Roll searchers unite! [email addy]" Less noticeable to the casual person, more to those who pay attention when they open a roll.

I guess its a lot like where's George without ruining the coins. I like the idea of the outside of the wrapper. A simple return address sticker would work great. As far as businesses go, I'd like to hear from them to. I just find it fascinating that coins go from my desk, to a bank, then to someone else's desk, pizza shop, or wherever. I think the response rate would be low but fascinating.

Not to be a killjoy but I would take the time to set up a generic email first. A lot of businesses may use your email for ads and you don't want your main email flooded with spam. Other than that it might be fun to see the responses. Like the others said you might even make some connections with other coin hunters.

I've wrapped up a few rolls with this written on the wrapper. Don't know if it's helped with the membership here though.

In many areas now banks are sending out all incoming rolls or bulk coins for counting. This means that if that happens in your area or to the rolls you submit, they are just opened at a company for counting and the wrapper is discarded. By me all Bank of America and Chase banks are now doing this do to all the short rolls being returned to banks. Those are the ones with one coin missing per roll or a slug or washer added. Those areas that are now doing this are also charging people for that service. The results are added to your account. If you do not have an account, the price for that service is higher. If your banks are not yet doing this, they soon will according to officers at my Bank of America.
