I recently purchased a 10 oz Engelhard. Upon weighing it, I noticed it came out at 11 oz. Is this normal? I also blurred out the serial #. :-)

Yes, it has an ID number. It starts with a C and it is followed by 6 digits. I edited the ID number out from the original picture. Is the bar weighing more than 10 oz normal for an Engelhard? I am new to silver collecting so any guidance/input is appreciated.

Because of the avoirdupois ounce. One troy ounce is about 10% heavier than the aviordupois ounce. Therefore the 10 troy oz silver weighs 11 regular oz. If you search avoirdupois ounce and troy ounce it will explain it better.

Ah makes total sense. I just looked it up. 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams. Thanks - I heart my new silver bar.

select mode:

troy oz =10.00
av. oz = 10.97
dwt = 200.00
gram = 311.03
grain = 4800

Maybe a RCH higher.

Now there is an international unit of wide acceptance... particularly amongst engineers.
