This is a South Africa R2.00 (Rand) coin. I think it is called a "clamshell" or "split planchet error" coin. I am trying to find out if there is a value attached to such a mint error. I have a letter from the SA Mint to say it is manufactured by them.

to CCF!

I don't know enough about these to tell the diagnostics from pictures, but if it is genuine it will certainly carry a premium.

We have some error specialists here that may be able to help you further. I'll be watching with you!

yes, it's a clamshell split planchet error. Usually these sell around about $10-$40, sometimes more. It's a wide range. Being that this coin is foreign, it might sell on the lower side. that just seems to be the trend.

Should you want to sell this coin, your best option would be to list it on ebay under "World Errors" with shipping "World Wide" as this would post your coin all ALL the ebay Global Sites...

My above comment should be "as this would post your coin ON ALL the ebay Global Sites".
*spell check doesn't work when the word you misspell is another word correctly spelled*

Hello,

Would any of you CCFers care to take a crack at answering my questions regarding a possible error 1996 50 cents coin from South Africa that I recently dug up:

https://goccf.com/t/157375

I know absolutely nothing about coins from this country and my most reliable source,

http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/wo...mSearch=true ,

shows nothing unusual or previously reported for this year insofar as foreign(non-USA) error/variety coins.

Thanks for looking,

mdpmedia
