I am a new collector and found this coin searching nickels. Do you guys have any idea of the value or rarity? I weighed it and it was 5 grams exactly.

Thanks for any feedback!

First ... to the CCF.

Your Jefferson is struck through a capped die ... nice find indeed. Not rare ... but for sure not common either. As to value I can't offer an expert opinion .... search ebay for 'capped die' and let us know what you come up with.

This is a genuine USA mint error. In simple terms ... what happened here is that a previously struck Jefferson was stuck (adhered, capped) to the obverse die ... and so when your coin entered the minting chamber the 'capped' obverse die left a very mush impression upon striking.

Can you read the date?

Nice find ... thanks for sharing.

David

Thank you just registered! I can't read the date I have looked at it through a 10x loupe and you can barely see the impression of "In God we trust" that is about it. Thanks for the information I appreciate it

At the very least, you can tell from the reverse picture that it is dated probably sometime between '89 and '03

Here is one to compare to for a value.
The two coins look almost identical.
