I've been incredibly lucky finding error notes at work and in my change over the last couple of years. These have all been found in circulation: $5 with Mismatched prefix: $10 with Mismatched serial numbers: $20 with Mismatched serial numbers: Sorry about the small pic- This was the first mismatched serial number note I found and sold it. It's the only pic I have:

-Ikandiggit- Cool name by the way and fitting! That's too cool. You should buy lottery tickets. ---I've looked forever and have never found one. I did however find a radar $100 way back and sold it, at the time was to much to hold on to, but never a Mismatched serial number error. You must have gone cross eyed to find so many, so hard to see, incredible and congratulations! That takes dedication! ---I got a question how could that happen? I could maybe see a single number off like 345-346 can you say? Yours are broad and varied. ---Are they intentionally messed with at the Mint?

Canadian banknotes are produced at the Canadian Banknote Company in Ottawa for the Bank of Canada. Each serial number on the notes is set by hand. The mismatch error could occur at this point or, as the notes are being printed, the numbers can get jammed and get out of sync. I've seen notes where the left hand serial number is completely different than the right number. Value goes up when more numbers are involved. Until the error is caught, the notes continue to be printed with the error as occurred with the ELN prefix. There were a relatively large number of errors in this prefix. There is a series of interesting videos on youtube "How Money Is Made" that shows the production process. It's from the U.S. but still applies to the way our notes are made. As for being intentional, I personally don't think so. Just human or mechanical error. Because I work in a cash-based business, I have the opportunity to search through a couple of thousand banknotes each day. Lottery tickets? I've had no luck even though I buy them on occasion.

-ikandiggit-Thanks for your taking the time to reply, sharing your insight! ---Your still a lucky guy figuratively speaking, keep trying with the lotto. You have to be in it, to win it! ---Like you said, you had to go through thousands of bills giving you the chance. Still, I say only with great effort! ---I have been know to share some of my positive thoughts when inspired! ---Luck isn't always about chance, but more something witch you make happen and achieved with effort, not just a given. "commoncents13" and believe wholeheartedly. ---That is not so commonly understood, but is more often true! ---You have demonstrated that with your finds. Making it so!Again congratulations! *** Edited by the Staff to removed excessive formatting ***

I agree, commoncents13, that in order to be "lucky" you have to put yourself in a position that brings you that luck.
Thanks for your comments!

Those are neat . So far I have not found any mismatched SN's although a lot of folks have found them (state side). A lot of older series notes state side had this issue (mismatched SN). Was the entire ELN prefix messed up? Fwiw - Sometime ago, I found a bunch of 1976 $2 notes which were misaligned (Minor to moderate). One batch was in sequence (high grade AU notes). To me the misalignment state side are sort of like the mis matched Sn's for Candian $. JMO - based on the amount of notes that surface / I have seen show up.

Quote: Was the entire ELN prefix messed up? No. But there was a relatively large number reported. I believe at least 15 showed up in a 4 month period. The Canadian Paper Money Forum documented the notes found on various auction sites and the ones that were posted on the forum. Other prefixes had mismatched numbers but in most cases only one or two notes from those. *Just for comparison... Most of the stack searchers stated that they've never found any mismatched serial numbers and some of them have been searching stacks for up to 35 years. My situation is an extreme rarity.

Do you think it has to do with how the notes were distributed?
Fwiw, Web Press notes - some of the rare blocks all got distributed in NE states and I beleive most of them were found only in one state.

Do you think it has to do with how the notes were distributed? That's always a possibility. But, when you consider the thousands of business in a city like Winnipeg that use cash, or the number of people that have cash on them and the amount of money that passes through banks, and then to have this many error notes funnel directly to me.... it boggles the mind! All my errors (Canadian) have come either from the VLTs at work or from Safeway or one other grocer and they are all within one block of each other.
