this coin was cleaned, and pretty harshly on the obverse, I would stay away if I were you. how much are they asking?

They were asking 100. I think for that price it's pretty fair considering there were only like 15,000 minted.

Lafayette dollars are commonly counterfeited. I don't know enough about them to authenticate them, but there are a couple of things about this coin that can be indicative of a counterfeit... 1) I see what look like pits or raised pimples in the fields (pointed to with arrows). 2) There seems to be some general lack of detail on the General. 3) $100 seems pretty low (assuming it's a Buy It Now rather than an auction)...maybe too good to be true? I'm always suspicious of "bargains" in numismatics. Plus, as already pointed out, it was harshly cleaned. These things make me suspicious enough to steer clear of it.

thanks a ton for your insight cwb8539! You are certainly right. The general has basically no detail, and the seller has 0 feedback. So after hearing all that, looks like I wont be getting this lafayette.

Quote: I think for that price it's pretty fair considering there were only like 15,000 minted. Actually .... there were 50,026 minted (includes 26 assay coins) ... and 14,000 were returned to the Mint in 1945 for melting. The total net mintage of this coin is 36,000 examples. That said ... IMHO this is not one of the original 36,000 survivors. Cast copies nearly always lack detail at the center of the coin ... and show signs of bubbles, pits, dots, etc on the devices and fields. Take the hint ... run away from this coin. David

There are very few commem collectors, and they can afford to buy nice ones. Even without authenticity questions, I'd pass on this scrubbed and discolored example.
