About 6 months ago a good friend of mine brought me a coin his father had found as a child and had no idea of the value. Since he knew I was interested in coins he thought I may give some estimate of what it was worth. The coin in question turned out to be a very very nice early capped bust silver halve. I don't actually grade coins, but I knew the detail was very impressive. Having no idea what the coin was worth, I went to ebay to find coins of simular quality and see how high the bids were actually going. Two things I noticed right away, very few coins offered was of this quality for the particular date, most of the coins that did compare were buy it now auctions or had high dollar starting bids. The long and short of it is I told him that the best thing to do is to have the coin professionally graded and sell it at a heritage auction or some other reputable auction. I suggested that the value, based on my ebay observations, was between $300 and $2500 dollars. Last night my friend calls me and asks if I want to buy the coin. I told him that I couldn't really afford a coin that nice and that I could only offer $200. I expected his father to decline the offer. He called me back this morning and told me that his father accepts my offer and would rather have the money sooner than later. So I've bought the coin. I've forgotten what the date was exactly, but I've bought it. I'll have the coin this time next week when he drives down to my area. I may have made a mistake, maybe not. Once I have the coin in hand, again. I'll post what I know everyone wants PICS!

Great story. I bet it will be worth way in excess of the $200 and you'll have a hard time ever parting with it.

If it's xf or better, you're OK. Not real likely, but certainly possible.

Well first off, congrats, every collector should get themselves a capped bust half. Looking forward to seeing what you got.

As far as getting the coin graded, I will do so based on the observations of the experts here in this forum. If its possible the coin has significant value, I will definitely have it graded and slabbed to preserve it. Then again, I could have made a mistake and agreed to purchase a coin that isn't worth $200. We'll all see soon enough. I'm mentally prepaired for the worst possible outcome. If it turns out I've overpaid for a coin, then no big deal. My son will someday inherit this coin amoung many others. By that time I'm sure it will be of little matter if ol' dad over paid for it way back when....

Your coin is the large letters variety and looks like an EF-40 to me so you did not overpay for this coin. ANA LM-3175

I'm thinking Vf-looks like it may have been cleaned in the past, as many were.

It looks VF+ to me and cleaned but not harshly cleaned. It could even go VF35 or so. If the $200 went to a good cause, leave it at that. No slabbing is justified here.

Yeah ... I agree this is a nice outcome. In time I do believe your purchase will still appreciate enough to have been a decent investment. That one has a really nice case of eye appeal. It would fly out of any showcase. Right now it is a fair enough deal anyways. Your friend got some help, you got a nice half.
