New Orleans. Struck with an 1840 obverse and a leftover 1839 Bust half reverse with medium letters. (In 1839 the mintmark was on the obv in New Orleans and this reverse can be traced by the die cracks to a variety of the 1839-O bust halves.)

the larger letters on the older die may not have been considered a significant enough difference at the time to not use the die when one was needed, or may have gone unnoticed altogether. the new orleans mint was responsible for some very scarce die pairings in its first few years, many of these die "mismatches" were probably the result of necessity rather than accident

Is this a particularly rare variety? I know some things that might be considered mint "errors" such as this are actually rather common, even to the point where it's the dominant variety minted in a particular year.

this variety is fairly tough, and the only "exciting" variety for the 1840-o
