What a nice find, hope you went back over that area again, and the vicinity, if there is anything else like that, it would be well worth the time. I don''t know about a "huge O" variety, only the "reverse of 1838-O" variety which was made with rusty dies causing a bumpy surface on the reverse. Probably someone on the forum could say, though,,,there is a tremendous amount of knowledge here..:)

I looked at the 1839-O Seated dimes on ebay and I just cant tell a difference, the Huge "O" is the reverse of 38 that fastfords was talking about. There is one of them on ebay right now if you want to compare, here is a link to it http://cgi.ebay.com/1839-O-Reverse-...-O_W0QQitemZ220001122572QQihZ012QQcategoryZ11958QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The O's have the same variation as the oval O and round O mint Morgans,, with almost exactly the same characteristics,, one the normal O is narrow and tall, the more rare, large O variety has a shorter round O .

Nice find J.D. You certianly have some great places that you detect.

There is a 1839O in the Cherry Pickers Guide that shows a repuched O with the first O south east of the last O.

This die variety goes for between 25 and 750 with the Grey sheet normal coin between 18-900.

Nice find.
