Hey guys and girls!

I am new to collecting coins. Started out with a 1919 penny I found doing demo at a building downtown were I live.

I am currently doing roll searching and am wondering if there are specifics I should be looking for aside from the oldies ( 1964 and under )

I have been pulling 1965s for the 5 thing but are there any others worth considering? thanks!

For myself when I hunt rolls I look for:

1 Cent: anything 1970 and older, then I check for any known varieties. 1985 for blunt or pointed 5. There are of course the shoulder/no shoulder folds to look for.

5 Cent: Again 1970 and older, also keep a look out for the 64' extra water line. Plus I like to keep the commemorative coins for our military

10 Cent: 1970 and older. Keep an eye out for silver 68'

25 Cent: 1970 and older plus I keep all the Olympic and commemorative ones. Also got a thing for 1973 Mountie ones.

When I first started I began a set of the best graded coin of every year I could find, and now I upgrade any of the dodgy ones as I go along.

There are many more varieties and such to look for but theses are the basics.

Here is a great site that will help you along with pricing and varieties:

I also look for this with the 2006 1 cent:

1) No P, no mint mark, Non-Magnetic: This is the most common one. About 1 billion in circulation

2) Mint Mark, Non-Magnetic: This is less common. 138 million in circulation

3) Mint Mark, Magnetic: This is less common. Total minted included in 138 million above.

4) P, Magnetic: This one is rare. Only 233,000 in circulation. I find one in every 5000 pennies I search.

5) No P, no mint mark, Magnetic: This is one is the holy grail. I am guessing that only a few hundred or few thousands exist

there are many different things to look for when roll hunting. It takes time and patience to learn what you can. I still consider myself a novice. there are others here that will have great advice for you. Just ask and they will be glad to help you
