Having collected more than 35,000 wheat pennies over the years, I have started my 8 yr old son roll searching. Like me when I was a kid, he gets a kick out of searching through the rolls for wheaties which seem to be few and far between most of the time.
Well anyway, while at the bank over the weekend he asked if we could get a few rolls so I bought ten dollars worth for him to work on. As I'm watching some of the basketball tournament I can hear him talking to himself as he's working away in the dining room and the next thing I know he's yelling for me to come see what he's found. So I make my way over to where he's working expecting maybe he's found one from the 40s or 50s. Well, he's managed to come up with about 12 in one roll. I was shocked.
To give the abridged version of this tale ... he ends up with 72 wheat pennies out of these 20 rolls with a decent 1915, a nice 1919D, a few twenties and the rest thirties through fifties. And if that wasn't enough he managed to turn-up a 1920 Canadian cent and a 1977 German 2 pfennig piece. What a haul, you would have thought it was Christmas in March around the old homestead. Can't say I've ever encountered or heard of anyone finding so many in so few rolls.
What fun it was to watch and hear him find each successive group as he furiously plowed through each roll. Reminded me of being a kid many years ago and why I have enjoyed the hobby for so long.

Nice going. If that was me I'd run back to that same bank and get more, just in case.

With these hard economic times, people are cashing in any coins they can get, which makes roll hunting very interesting! But 72 wheaties and 2 other foreign coins is great! That find is something your son will probably never forget!Good job Dad!

This find will probably spoil him with roll searching but I assure you ... it won't be one he'll soon forget. He talked about it all weekend and and when he got home from school yesterday.

That right there is what will make him a coin collector for life, I expect. He'll be "hooked" on finding those little treasures forever now ! It's kind of similar to gambling in a way......people who've never really hit a good jackpot, couldn't really care less about going gambling again.... or they've just been a few times, didn't have much luck, and are just fine with never going back. BUT..... for those who score a $1,000.00 jackpot or whatever......you always want to go back again and again so that you have a chance to do it again ! .... Coin collecting is a MUCH MUCH better "sport" though ... ....safer too ! .... My "analogy" was just to show the similar "fever" that can 'get' ya ! ....not to support your local casino ! .... (for the record, I haven't been gambling in a few years!)

Great story, thank you for sharing! My son will be three in a couple of weeks. I patiently await the time when I can introduce him to the world of numismatics. I say patiently because I would not trade the next few years for anything.

GMWatson - This is a great story. I too just got my 5 year old roll searching wheats. She likes my coins, and when I suggested searching for wheat pennies she jumped at the chance. We are still on her first box (about 7 rolls to go), and it has been memorable. So far, she has pulled 2 1911's, a 1913, a 1914, a 1916 S, a 1918 D, a 1919, a 1928 S and 30-40 wheats 1930 and newer. I got her 3 Whitman Folders covering Lincoln cents to hold her coins. Every night she asks to look for pennies for her book. Good stuff.

I started mine off at the same age roll-searching cents. If yours is anything like mine in a few years he's going to know more about these than you know. Really, this is the way to start them off!
