I'm curently using a Nikon CoolPix L18 (8MP) digital camera for pretty much everything. Coins, video, etc. Over the months/couple years, I've gotten pretty decent at making it take good coin photos. My question is, what are your opinions on using scanners for coin pics? I see people here using them quite a bit and they seem good. Would a basic scanner out-do my Nikon?

Another reason I ask is we have a scanner here at Wally World for $32. It prints, scans and copies! Since I don't have a printer or anything, I'm considering getting it, but especially so if it would help me get better coin pics.

I have seen a few real nice coin pics here on CCF done with a scanner but I think it was scanner that can scan at 7200 or 9600 dpi and those are not cheap. Also I don't think you can get a very good close up with a scanner,a usb digital microscope works better. IMHO,

Depending on your needs a scanner is great. There are some downsides however. Here's a link comparing a camera vs. a scanner.
