I've been going through my coins pretty heavily lately. It's getting to that point where I need to make some hard decisions about what and how to keep and what I want to get rid of. So, I was going through a roll of uncirculated 1952 Fifty Cent pieces and came across this... the rest of the coin looks great, nice strike, obverse is really great actually. The upper left of the coat of arms has always been notoriously weak on these coins, it's what always stops them from getting to a 65 or 66. So I wasn't surprised to see weakness... but this is weak! Struck Through Grease I'm thinking.. The coat of arms in this area is almost flat to the fields and the mint lustre is perfect right up to the edges of the device there... notes on wrapper indicate I bought the roll in 1983 and I've never opened it.

Thought I'd show a pic and share the oddballs.

Different angle here, adjusted gamma and contrast to try and make it obvious as heck...

I've seen a lot of coins Struck Through Grease, but not like that And if it was a weak strike, it wouldn't be just 2 specific areas... I'd like to see what others have to say about this one, it's a nice coin nonetheless

To me it looks like there may have been an annealing problem with the planchet. If a coin blank is too hard, it does not strike up well.

I thought of that.. but then when I look at the surface of the poorly struck raised devices it's really porous looking. If you get a badly annealed planchet usually the design surface there shows a simple lack of detail like a low relief. Further, bad annealing on silver and copper leaves a colour change and since this coin isn't toned it would be obvious I'd think. Also, the location of the strike failure (whatever it may be) is fairly localized and silver/copper alloys being the conductor that they are... it's tough to say annealing failed in that one spot only...

It's interesting looking though....
Rest in Peace
