zinc is a stupid metal to make coins out of. it falls apart easily, and a house fire will destroy it.

I use to just throw them away, now I keep them in a little container and after I have a few I take them to the mini-market and put them in the free penny tray where everyone usually drops their pennies in.

Your all wrong. This is one of the Mints attempts to make a more scarry coin so people wouldn't treat them so bad. Or since so many are complaining about the cost to make a cent, they started to leave parts of them out to save money.
