My 12 year old and I do a lot of penny roll searching but I was even surprised this time when she found a cool looking 1984 D. Hoping someone with more experience can help her and I figure out how this happened. Was it before or after the minting process?

Thanks!

I think it was Post-mint..

It got crunched, and probably started dissolving.. (Like all zincoln will do 50 years from now )

That's what they look like (but less shiny) in the bottom of the cup holder in my car. Zinc... bleah.

zinc is a stupid metal to make coins out of. it falls apart easily, and a house fire will destroy it.

I use to just throw them away, now I keep them in a little container and after I have a few I take them to the mini-market and put them in the free penny tray where everyone usually drops their pennies in.

Your all wrong. This is one of the Mints attempts to make a more scarry coin so people wouldn't treat them so bad.
Or since so many are complaining about the cost to make a cent, they started to leave parts of them out to save money.
