I was at a local bank today and bought 42 nickle dollars, as I was paying for them the teller mentioned that earlier in the day a client had brought in 3 $1000 bills . I asked if I could purchase them , the head teller overheard our conversation and quickly stated that they could not be sold, the Bank of Canada requires old paper money to be sent back to them for destruction,I tried pleading in the name of collectors out there but to no avail, Rats.

Wow. Maybe if you want one you could put an add in your local newspaper. The client that brought those bills in would have gladly sold those to you. Just a thought.

Depends on your relationship with the bank, they'd usually rather sell them to you than fill out the paperwork.

Similar rule in the US, but banks pull them for customers and get a premium.
