I went by the Whitman Expo and picked up some coins. But by far, my greatest pick-up was this little beauty: I also made a jump start on my new Franklin collection by getting 4, including a 1949. I would have stayed longer and gotten even more, but mom said it was time to go home . If only I could go back Friday and Saturday, but alas I have other commitments. Oh well. I've got the coin graded at VF-30. I got a great price on it, since old dealers take pity on you when you're a little kid! Edited by fengk 10/05/2006 8:23 pm

That's just exactly the condition in which I'm collecting them. Would I be imposing to ask how much it set you back?

No problem, SuperDave. I paid $80 for the coin. The dealer started at $95. I asked him for his best price, and he quoted $85. But when you're 14 years old and show a great interest in coins, that $5 sure does disappear really fast! Being the good guy that he is, he sold me the coin for his cost, $80.
I find it interesting that the dealer also had some $30,000 Draped Bust Halves, but took the time to help me pick out my coin. If you need his name and number, I'll be happy to give it to you.

just when I was beginning to think that my hefty 18 years of age was the young one of the forums...

Wow, that coin design was only made in 1836-1837, and only 3,629,820 of themwere made at the time. So few would still exist, being treasured by all who find one.
Well, done. You got a beauty of a coin at a good price. $80 is a lot harder to come by when your 14 years old than the $95 is to an older adult. The dealer did the right thing.

Congratulations fengk, nice coin. Whenever I read your posts, I forget that you are fourteen years old, I always think of you as mid-twenties. You have a very mature style of writing, and your content is always worth reading!

Thanks guys, I think that the toning is even prettier in hand! Actually, I'm thinking of using this as a standard for my new Bust Half date set. Would nice, problem free coins be available in the the grade I'm looking at for prices that won't break the bank?

I believe you did well, although I might go VF25 on that coin. That said, the price was not great, but decent as long as the surfaces are original. I bought an 1828 last night in similar shape, for similar money. There's something that really appeals to me about VF-EF Busties.
Excepting the rarities, you should be able to do much of the series in similar shape for as much or less money than this one. Figure a little more for 1824 and earlier, and maybe a little less for mid-late 1830's. You can afford to be patient with this series, from my experience. I've picked up only my first three in the last six months, waiting for the right coin to come along.

I'm pretty sure the surfaces are original. The coin has some really beautiful toning, and that may have carried a slight premium. If I can get most of the coins in the series for this price, I think my bust half fever will just get worse!

Square base 2, very nice VF-35+ looking coin to me. The coin dealer in town has my attribution book or I'd try to attribute it for you, oh well. It's (your coin) not going anyplace.

The dealer said it was an o.106, which is an R-2. Thanks, it's nice to hear so many kind words about this coin. The only bad thing is that now I'm really hooked!
