hey, gc here,

when the new quarters started up back in 1999 or so, I started putting them their own cup. after a while I forgot about it until recently. so I broke it out and noticed some of the states, south carolina for example, have 2 different color tones. while the denver version is silver looking, the phily versions are silver or yellow/light copper looking (they are the same on either side).

any thoughts?

Hi gravitycure

Welcome to the forum !!

One possible explaination is if these coins were taken from circulation at various times and places ? then environment before coming into your hands could play a big part in toning or no toning variations,, Some of the toning could even be a result of where and how you had the coins stored ? humidity , and temp variations can make a coin tone, put both circumstances together, those before your getting the coins and those since you have had them, and the differences in the coins can be remarkable.

Quite a few of the earlier quarters in the statehood program looked toned and they ALL are from Philly. Actually the blanks are washed prior to striking and it my firm belief that Philly does a very poor job or washing and, or drying and their quality is not even near the quality of the Denver produced coins. What you are seeing, I assume, is not toning as many of the Philly quarters left the mint with the toned look!

Crystalk's explaination is viable, although I have not seen any of the coins that were dis colored from the beginning, I do have some in the books that have taken on a yellowish,or golden color since being put in ,,

They all started bright and shiny .

hey, thanks for the info. metalman, the coins were all kept together in a plastic cut, in my clothes closet. nothing extreme, really. I will attempt to take a few photos and post sometime this weekend.

High there gavitycure, just for the record, I believe that Crystalk's explaination is the simple solution to your problem.
The first few years of production were all togather different at Phillie and Denver. Denver always produced cleaner and better coins and this practice has continued even today
