As a novice, it looks like someone tried to use an eraser to remove something. I'm no expert so wait for a more talented technical adept pro to chime in. I have seen erasers used on LWC and silver half dollars when I was a kid and they removed the problem as well as the luster in the area.

If the surfaces are that dull in-hand, then I would say it has had an overly aggressive dip at a minimum.

The obverse does appear to have been cleaned to some extent. The reverse looks better, but is still dull.

so help me here with the dull vs. not dull comment. won't coins through normal 'wear' get dull. How does dull play into the cleaning question? This is not an antagonistic question, I really want to know. I guess I'm not seeing the same evidence of cleaning others may be seeing. I certianly see the 'scuffing' on the obverse but since I have never taken an eraser to a coin I guess maybe I don't know what that looks like

I am certainly not an expert on British Empire coinage but this coin appears to have mid-high AU detail. Even an EF example should have significant luster present on the very protected reverse. AU+no luster= cleaned/dipped. What I am not seeing is evidence of hairlines or a harsh scrubbing, the field to the right of the effigy shows the remnants of an old fingerprint.

thanks biokemist. I see how the dull comment plays here. too much detail, not enough luster likely indicates cleaning, probably dipping or overdipping. I understand that the practice of dipping silver was quite the rage in the 'old' days. I guess it must have been somewhat expected and accepted. I wonder what would happen to to this coin if your used like MS70 on it. would you get back some of that 'luster' or would it just be artificial shine. I like the coin regardless and wouldn't hesitate to add it to mu collection.

Might be the photo too that makes it appear as cleaned. Although many, many coins in the old days here were cleaned. Usually not to make them sell better but in many instances the populace did mamual types of work and the coins would get really messy. So a bit of cleaning was just for not wanting to handle dirt. I remember my Dad dunking coins in gasoline before he would bring them home.
yours may have had something done to it but appears a long time ago.

exactly my thoughts justcarl. I've often thought about this when I see any 'foreign' coin looking so good. I wonder who actually kept it so nice without it ever having been cleaned. it just seems too much to believe. I would believe that the population of coins that haven't been cleaned in some fashion in their past is really small. That said, I would add this coin to my collection in a heartbeat for the right price (and that is the right price in my eyes not the holder which often means I don't get to add it)
