Numismedia says that in G4 the 1983 p and d are worth $2.30 and $1.15 respectively. I think I heard something about there being no mint sets released. doesn't that just mean these would be conditional rarities in higher grades? why would poor condition ones be worth over a dollar? just curious because I have been saving these and want to know if I should stop. I went to costco and got $.75 change and 2 of the quarters were 1983 p and 1983 d quarters.

if you look at the guide... it says 83 G-3 through xf-40 are all worth 2.30 then you see the jump in MS grades

thats why I'm confused. i'd expext them to just in ms grades, but why would low grades be worth more than a quarter. there were hundreds of thousands made. i'd expect low grade ones to be worth face. that's the part I'm confused about.

Those years are teasers. There's a roll of '82 nickels on the bay right now, with a BIN of 360.00.

I think finding one of these with honest wear grading G-4 would be next to impossible. There is no reason for for a coin less than XF-40 to be even listed.

The prices below XF are what I call "dealers nuisance charge" The additional fee over face value charged for a coin that really shouldn't be more than face value. For example although common date wheats in fairly decent condition can be bought by the roll for Three Cents each, the RedBook prices are considerably higher. That's the "Nuisance charge". It compensates the dealer for his time and effort to stock and catalog the coin. For the most part if a dealer doesn't get a dollar or two minimum per coin, he is losing money.

In 1982 and 1983 the mint only produced special mint or souvenir sets. As far as I know they could only be purchased at the respective mints. So think about how few of these sets there are, and how few uncirculated quarters exist for those two years. I just completed two sets of Washington quarters from 1932-1998 and 1932-2009. I searched out unc. quarters for all the clad, and had to pay a premium for the 82P,82D,83P,83D. As for circulated ones, they are only what they are, twenty five cents
