I'm a huge novice. For the Morgan I paid for an AU, and for the Large Cent I paid for an EF. Just spot checking the dealers I went to.

Looks to me like you did good. The pics are a touch too dark to give an accurate grade. As for the Morgan, you can still see a great amount of detail in the hair and breast feathers so I would have to agree with AU. It's difficult to tell where any of the wear is located due.

Well trooper, from the looks of your pics I think the EF is just about right for the copper but from the pics it looks like you got better than an AU for your morgan. It looks at least MS-63 perhaps higher. One of the more experienced morgan guys can give it a better look but that is what I see.

I'm learning the hard way to very careful of deciding if something is "MS" without a very close look at the luster or lack thereof.

I'd give that Morgan a very high AU tho, AU55-58

You did very well on the Morgan - I can't tell from the pics for sure, but at worst it's a high-end AU and likely MS. The Cent is technically an EF, depending on what you can do about the stuff on it (I read your other thread).

Thanks guys. Based on your input I'm at least confident in the AU grading. There are some contact marks that are less visible in the photograph.

As for the copper, I'm leaning toward giving it the extra-virgin olive oil treatement. From now on though I'm just not going to buy coins that have even a trace of corrosion.

The dealer (for the copper) had it marked at the AU price, and I called him on it. He looked it up and said "the other guy" must have looked at the wrong row. I'm not jumping to conclusions but it did make me raise an eye brow. Then he offered to give it to me for $60 vs the marked $125 price. So I bit.
