....ounce of gold!! What did you all think I meant? I can dream though! Anyways, this was part of a trade from a forum member and is an ex-jewelry piece. Going into the half eagle roll with all his indian friends. Opinions?

Nice coin Johnny! I love old gold even when it's been used in jewelry or otherwise abused. Has more of a cachet than all the modern MS-70 and PR-70 gold put together. These coins were actually used in day to day transactions by ordinary people. Can't say that about modern gold.

Quote:hahah I thought maybe you were gonna say 1901s Barber quarter :D It's an interesting year/mint, because it's one of the highest mintage gold half eagles and one of the lowest mintage of quarters! I wonder what was up with that?

That's a nice one, usually the pieces I've seen from jewelry have solder, and a thousand problems to go with them... Another nice pick-up for the roll

Thanks. This one was in a bezel, but fortunately no damage or solder to the rim was done.

Nice roll find johnny! I see you're buying a lot of raw gold and want to make sure you're weighing these and verifying the diameter and thickness. At first glance I didn't like the date on that piece. Probably just the image and an old cleaning but nevertheless, fisch type measurements are always in order and will confirm they're gold.

I am more cautious with the indians for this reason, as I know they are highly counterfeited. For that reason, I've been mostly buy slabbed problem examples and then removing them from the slab. Believe it or not, it is usually just as cheap if not cheaper doing it that why then buying a raw example. This half eagle I fear has had a rather abrasive cleaning at one point which make the surfaces look really off. The first thing I did though when I received it was to weigh it and make sure the diameter and thickness lines up with my other gold. It passed that test, and even if it didn't, I traded it from a reputable source so he would work something out with me if it was fake.
