I feel different all of a sudden. It started just this last weekend. I started looking at silver prices and considering an investment in it. So next thing I know I am looking at silver prices for like 4 days straight. Ok, next I see this link that tells me that all 1964 and earlier dimes, quarters, half dollars, and dollars are 90% silver except for the 42-45 nickels. So what do I do next, I get out my monstrous coin stash that I have just been saving for about a year now. must be like 300 dollars in coins. so than I go through all of the dimes first. first I'm checking each date again and again. I find one, there she is. in the first 20 minutes, a 1964 dime. I put it up to the stack of dimes I'm searching through at the moment and notice the different color, which leads to believe that it is easier to find them this way. so I go through the rest of them, quarters (not the nickels... yet) but am afraid I will. I'm 26 years old. so today, I go to the local coin store near my house that has been there for years. I buy a silver dollar for 40 bucks. + tax ROFL @ TAX. seems wierd being taxed on buying a coin. anyways here I am reading your coinstar posts and vending machine tips. LOL. I love this already and I think I might be transforming into something else. I was at taco bell today at the drive through right. I go to give her 4.36. I check for change, find a quarter dime and penny and go to pay with it, BUT FIRST I LOOK AT THE DATES LOL. this is hilarious I'm sorry I'm still trying to take all of this. not even a week. and I'm looking at the dates on the coins before I buy something. anyways I look forward to speaking with some of you on here in the future. I am afriad I might be doomed to be a collector. cheers.

to the forum!

Uh Oh is right! I also have this problem but worse. I can't even give the cashier change when I buy something because I want them to give me change. I then look at the dates before I put them in my pocket sometimes bumping into people in the process. Keep looking at those dates and let us know if you find anything else interesting.

THIS IS SO FUNNY. I can see it now... I'm gonna be buying something thats 20.01 and reach in my pocket and check the date on the penny I find, look at the cashier and be like you cant have this one. LLOLLLLLLLLLLLLL hilariuos this is some of the funniest stuff I've read in a long time. normally ill be like I dont wanna break a 10... LOL now I'm gonna be breaking 20s and asking for change back in quarters and dimes. this is too funny. I'm sorry I've never realized this part of the world existed.

anyways are there any tips you guys could give me as a beginner. it started out as a gold/silver investment but now I really dont even wanna do that I just wanna collect coins. anyways where do I start... I already know that I can raid the cash registers at my work for coins, and check vending machines, and coinstars.. how does this bank thing work out of curiosity. do I just go in and say I want 100 dollars in quarters lol. do I have to have an account at the bank.

Yup, I don't even spend change. It all comes home to be checked with a loupe and then rolled and returned to a bank. You can talk to your bank and tell them what you are doing but most likely you will have better luck if you do have an account.

theguzz10,

You have a lot to learn. You don't pull out 20.01 from your pocket. You pull 21.00 from your pocket. This way you get an additional .99 to check. Welcome to the addiction!

I was a plastic man till I started this thing called coin collecting. Now I pay with paper and keep my eyes on the ground looking for the forgotten ones, just last week picked a 1945P wheaty off the floor at McDonalds.

Hobbies always change but coin collecting has been around for possibly thousands of years. And it anyone ever finds the Lost Continent of Atlantis, bet the first thing found is someone's coin collection. Makes me wonder if the first cave people collected coins or whatever they used then. Imagine making coins with a hammer and chisel, one at a time out of rocks.
Wonder if in the future the newest collections will be credit/debit cards?

Never forget. All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people.

I didn't think you had to pay taxes on coins.

Maybe he used a credit/debit card and he got charged tax for it. It's happened to me.

Yea, if the purchase is like $17.01, I'll pull out an extra dollar instead of a penny to get change lol
