hey everybody!
picked this manhole cover up today at my local coin store, the guy at the counter was looking to get rid of it so I was able to get it for around 12$
just wondering whether this was the Matte, Special Uncirculated or proof(i know its probably not) it seems to be wizzed pretty badly... and if anyone knows a value that would be great!

pics are here! http://www.flickr.com/photos/61271025@N04/

Thanks!

determining whether this is the silver one should be easy by using a magnet. if it is magnetic, then it isn't silver (proof version).

I personally don't know how you would tell which of the Copper-Nickel version this would be given the heavy whizzing (or whatever that is). The Unc version is $10 and the Matte finish is $60 according to krause but given what appears to be heavy damage, not sure what you might try and get for it. that is a shame really!

oh, and I assume you mean KM8

I doubt it's the matte version. These were Franklin Mint coins, and sold in the usual low-quality Franklin Mint packaging, which probably caused discolouration and toning which a previous owner attempted to remove. I suspect it's a regular cupronickel unc or silver proof version. You're supposed to be able to tell by the frostiness or otherwise of the devices, but after such harsh cleaning that's probably not a reliable indicator anymore. The CuNi and silver versions probably weigh different, but NumisMaster doesn't give weights for the CuNi version.

A magnet is useless for telling them apart; neither silver nor cupronickel will stick to a magnet. If it's magnetic, then it's a Chinese fake.

The matte mintage is probably correct. As far as I can work out, the Franklin Mint struck the non-proofs "to order" - and hardly anyone ordered the mattes.
