I have a novice question for you pros

How does one obtain a new US gold coin such as the eagles and buffalos? I see them selling for a premium all the time but how did they get their hands on them?

I believe many of the current US gold and silver coins are considered bullion, and are sold by the mint to dealers. Some coins are sold by the mint to the public, others would be purchased through these dealers. Check at the mint's page to see what's available to the public.

I agree with Fuzzy. If you just want a gold coin, the mints proof coin program probably is the safest and least expensive way to buy. Too many others put high premiums on the gold they sell. If you can't recognize counterfeited or grade gold coins, buy from the mint or certified coins from a reputable dealer. There are a lot of counterfeits out there even in slabs.
