I'm not much into coin collecting and recently came across this strange penny. Is it anything more than someone with too much time on their hands? Thanks to anyone who can help!

Welcome!

Your coin has been counterstamped with the Free Masons emblem. Some people do collect these and it might be worth a buck or two to the right individual. Technically, it is considered as damaged.

Thanks Scooby. I had no clue what it was, I figured it was certainly some post minting damage.

I have one of those tucked away somewhere on a 1944 wheatie. Got it many years ago from my great-uncles collection.

I have at least five different ones of these - all have the masons symbol in different arrangements. I believe my earliest is on a 1937 Wheat cent.

In all my cent roll searching, is it weird that I've never found a stamped or counter-stamped penny, or anything altered like that?
