Now that I've started collecting ancient coins I find that, as usual, I'm all over the place.

I have about a dozen fairly nice coins, mostly Roman , some Greek, and about a dozen uncleaned coins soaking in distilled water, that don't seem to have much hope.

I haven't spent much, but enough where I could of had a couple of nice coins for a type collection. I don't regret having the coins, I like them and it's been interesting and fun.

I am wondering if collecting a group of Constantine commemoratives would be a good idea. One each from different mints and the officinas. Like this one, I borrowed the picture from Wildwinds.

Pondering-What-Roman-Type-To-Collect......

For some reason I like these coins and there seem to be quite a few around in nice condition for reasonable prices.

I'm interested in knowing what some of you think about a set like this. Would it be a good way to go while I continue studying ancients or would it be better to wait and find another type?

There are so many you could choose from.

Any opinions will be appreciated.

Once again ....Thanks

That would be a wonderful project to start! Would you just be doing the Constantinopolis coins or the URBS ROMA coins as well? Also, you are correct that these particular coins are not terribly expensive as other Roman types can be. However, some, such as the coins minted in Lyons and London, are fairly expensive because these mint issues are rarer and more desirable.

Personally my collection (76 coins so far!) spans from the early Republic to right about the fall of the Empire. I also have lots of coins soaking now. If you don't mind, may we see some pics of the finished coins in your 'hoard'? :)

Sure
I'm afraid there is not much there yet, but I'll show you the better things.

I did see the possibility of the Roma comems also...that would be a lot of coins.

See if you can get yourself a copy of

'Late Roman Bronze Coinage' by Carson Hill & Kent.

I was in the British Museum Coins & Medals Department way back in 1971, where this book was recommended to me.

Only a slim volume with no illustrations, but very authoritative, with all of the mints and officinae with types listed.

These days there are lots of illustrations to be had on various websites so that is no big deal for me.

It's a bit the ancient Roman version of collecting LWC's

That's sounds like a interesting project to complete. Some of the mints might be a little harder to come buy though.
