Oh, I know that the original design was in use for a looong time. :) I even have a few ... not really from the early years but from the late 1960s (10 francs) and 1970s (50 francs). Yes, I agree the Monnaie de Paris issues lots and lots of fairly pricy coins. These new Hercule pieces, however, will be available at face, much like the Semeuse/Sower series (2008-2010). But while I found those designs, with the sower and the sun "moving" from coin to coin, quite attractive, this new one is ... well, I am not fond of it.

However, you can get both the €100 and the €1,000 Hercule coin at face value. Of course the intrinsic (precious metal) value is lower than that - but at least you don't pay 500 euro or so for a 100 euro piece.

Face value ?
Try to get one of those and go buy a nice restaurant with it ... although it's legal to use it (in France, not in europe) - I'm not sure anyone will see this as anything else than a fancy token :D
OK, it's similar to the old 50 francs, which no one ever saw :D

Just a quick update - just received the coin set, and I'm very glad to have bought it :)
Those sets look way better than current Euro ones.

Thanks dumprat !
