I store all my coins in 2x2 holders and put them in binders. I have been folding the 2x2 stapling it shut then folding narrow Scotch Magic Tape around the sides of the 2x2 to seal out any air. Does anyone have any comments on this practice. I just do not feel the 2x2 is that air tight with just stapling, but I really like the way they store in binder sheets for showing people sets.

Love to hear your opinions

I for one do not recommend useing scotch tape to seal edges of 2x2 inserts, this can lead to bleeding and micro fungus to copper coins as the tape is not usualy acid treated.
When stapling use a pair of pliers to crimp the staple tight this should keep the coin airtight, although a little bit of air will keep the humidity at bay, and try to keep the binders upright for the same reason.
Everyone has a different way of storing coins, just go with what you are comfortable with.

I don't know what residue is on the scotch tape, if it impacts the coins and causes corrosion or not. I've had coins in stapled 2x2's for 30+ years that show no signs of change without the tape, so adding it seems unnecessary and perhaps an unknown risk to me. I've reholstered all my old coins from ages gone by from the little brown envelopes we used to use into mylar flips and from the old plastic flips into mylar as well.

I now keep my core collection in airtights. They look great in pull out drawers and are easily examined pretty safely by fellow coin conspirators.

They're not airtight. Another thing to think about is the binders that you keep the sheets in. A plastic binder cover can contain pvc and ruin the coins.

The glue on any adhesive tape will break down over time, and the tape will 'let go'. It is reasonable to assume that broken down adhesives and will gas out, much like the fogging on the inside of car windows.

The obvious advantage of a cardboard 2x2 is that the attribution information and purchase details go with the coin. Sometimes, I have a bit of a problem writing around the staples!

BTW, I only use coppered staples.

Thank you all for your comments, I think the tape will go as you said Ugly you have had yours in 2x2's for 30+ years I don't think I will be around then. I do like to 2x2's for writing on etc, but will just be going with them straight. Do believe I will take the tape off the one's that have it. It makes sense that this will eventually break down. It is just the silver and nickel dollars that really don't seal that well, will maybe look into air tites for them.

Thanks again all
Allan
