I used acetone to remove what appeared to be glue on the trime.. What grade would you give it in its current condition? Edited by nwc coin 04/06/2011 09:49 am

These are a bit tough to sometimes grade without seeing in hand. The pictures make it look like a harshly cleaned XF.

I see what you're saying based on the picture.. I just took a loupe to it in sunlight, and I dont see the lines.. Must be a relic of the photo.. I was having a really hard time getting the picture to accurately represent it.

I've learned the hard way that usually photos never lie. I can't tell you how many times I come home from a coin show with a new purchase and quite excited. Then I photograph it and notice something I missed. I try convincing myself it's not there, then I look very closely at different angles under different lighting...and voila!...I see what I missed but the photos pick up. It kills me, but it happens all the time. Is it possible, that there's artifacting by a photo...yes...but usually, what you see is what you really have.

You might be right - I had the same experience at a coins how a month ago. Bought 3 coins, 2 of them ended up being problem coins! It's amazing how good digital photography is these days..
In most cases where a camera sees it but an eye doesn't.. it's usually an older cleaning that's toned over some, right? Where it takes the right light/angle to show the old cleaning underneath? From what I've seen with harshly cleaned coins, they are usually pretty obvious.. Although I suppose a coin could have been harshly cleaned a long time ago, has toned back, and it's not so obvious?

To the trained eye and the right lighting, it almost always obvious. Think of the grading services...stuff like that doesn't normally slip by them. It kills me as to how many problem coins I've ended up with that I originally thought were "prizes".

I just say thank goodness for ebay. I'll resell them there as a problem coin, and lose a little money off of it... turn around and buy a new one that I'm happy with. Without the huge ebay audience, I dont know where else it'd be easy to get rid of problem coins that I advertise as problem coins. I'm thankful for the small segment of the collecting population who sees a problem coin as a cheaper way to get treasure. Mistakes do get expensive though. There's no doubt about that. And thanks for all the info Prethen - I've learned a lot about 2cn, 3cn, and 20cn pieces from you!
