I believe that PCGS and NGC employ more or less equivalent quality graders.

So I'm looking at some MS-67 1941 LWC's and literally the ones in the PCGS holders are going for 3x the NGC holders at auction. The coins? More or less identical in one case the NGC coin is actually much nicer.

My only conclusion is that people buying the PCGS coins are getting an $80 coin in a $200 holder. I hope those holders retain their value... my bets are on some price depreciation since plastic isn't really worth that much.

PCGS is "perceived" to be the premier grading service over that of NGC. The old maxim cannot be over-repeated: "Buy the coin, not the holder."

I think that if you can pick them out raw it means you're armed with knowledge while the others rely on some anonymous opinion that is backed up by their corporation. Pay yourself.

I don't think a grading service should be considered premier, or even good, if they deliberately undergrade the highest mint state coins to create an artificial scarcity for their "brand".

I'm guilty of buying one MS-70 PCGS modern coin but from here on out I'm going to stop doing that because, as a collector, it is just stupid on my part -- throwing away my money.

Your bet is what they call a sure thing.

We're reminded daily that to get ahead in this world we often must exercise our skills in handling other people by arts other than logic. The experts in marketing are aware of same; of what the French call, expressively, and, rather cynically, bourrage de crane, "brain-stuffing." So much for that...

Those prices are way out of my league, so I don't know, but if the quoted price discrepancies are common it looks like you could make a living of buying quality non-PCGS graded coins, getting them graded with PCGS, and just resell.
Rest in Peace

Yep....this is a prime example of the curse of "market grading".

I like liveanddievarieties approach...you don't have to like slabs, but take advantage of the situation while you can.

I know a dealer who will inspect 300 of the same coin. Pick out all the ones he think will be a MS/PF 70. Send in 100-200 of them. As long as he gets about 10% back as 70's he'll make money. and the rest of the 69's are just profit

Even though I'm new, my opinion based off everything that I've read on this forum and seen on ebay so far is that I feel ANACS is the most honest(or conservative depending on if you own or are selling the coin.. hehe) PCGS seems to be a bit more in demand and therefore a bit more pricy.. It just so happens the first slabbed coin I bought was NGC and I think the coin is great so now I'm biased towards NGC!

I've been using a cellular term for that activity: JAILBREAKING.
A lot more descriptive and less seamy than the term CRACKOUT...

Here's another fun one 2009-S PF70 DCAM Lincoln Formative Years.

On Teletrade: $230 for the PCGS graded coin. $9 for the ANACS graded coin.
