I guess if I tried to hammer a nail with a screwdriver, that would be tough too. Many forum members spend incredible amounts on a camera, and expect it to be a microscope. PLEASE- no offense to the OP, just a point that became obvious in this thread. For far south of $300, one can purchase a QUALITY, DIE CAST, STEEL microscope, with a 10MP camera which plugs directly into your computer. I have no agenda here- my only point is that if I constantly complained that my Ferrari couldn't handle 4X4'ing, someone would clear that up for me right away. My point is that for a few hundred bucks, one can purchase a tool that produces professional quality images. Why spend more to get less? Report this Post to the Staff

I have asked for such advice in other posts and got nada... so sometimes all a y2k guy like me can do is whine.... (a try at being humorous here... ) And since I am showing my ignorance, poor humor and abject stupidity more probably... I would love to see a post of how the long timers such as you and coppercoins etc etc, go about organizing and searching through a few thousand cents... I know it is a stupid question because I have seen others ask it and more or less be teased for asking. Now here is the way I do it... invented this. (1) I get set up with a comfortable chair and low table and a nice light (per a coppercoins suggestion) a couple feet away at a low angle (2)using grandma's magnifier (large and low power because my eyes are not good enough to read the dates and mint marks) I sort the cents by year or "error group". At this time I also pull out any obvious AUs, wheats, Barber dimes (more humor here), etc. (3) then I go back with a 10x loupe and exaustively look for error coins etc. But as I have asked in other posts... Is there a scope camera way of doing this, so I cant just look at my computer image... a faster better way? Any help MUCH appreciated! coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 04/11/2011 4:07 pm I prefer looking through a scope. Then you can see what is there/or isn't. I use the scope for taking images through with a hand help camera. So Scope is my choice. At one time I used a scope that put the images on a computer screen. But the unit had plastic lens and gave poor quality. It also had poor lighting and the colors of copper always looked pine instead of copper. Best thing to do is search, save anthing that looks different and when you can afford a scope, then search your coins you saved that looked interesting. With a good scope, if it is interesting, it maybe tossed or kept depending on what you found. Report this Post to the Staff

I take full images of dimes/cents/nickels throught the scope or with a infinite zoom I can get the close up or shot I want.
