I think this is the most worn out of the bunch. Almost no remaining luster, however, it does look problem free to my eye. This one was a raw purchase, and it looks to be an 11-s, though I'm not quite sure. I keep trying to picture the lump as a "d" in my head, but it doesn't quite work...

Oops, forgot pics:

I'd really like to believe it to be a "d", but I think it's an "s". Any other opinions? I can try to get some better shots of that area.

Lack of luster would keep this one out of AU. Probably EF45.

First Topic: This is a different one then I normally see: the lower obverse feathers on the headress definitely show wear but the normal first place for wear on this coin type is on the reverse, the top of the eagle's wing, which is almost pristine.

She's nice one at any rate. I say EF-40.

Second topic: The Mint Mark. I think the mark to the left of the arrows is PMD. (I know...I'm sorry! ) I think your mark is too low to be a mm.

Here's my 1908D for a D mint mark location:

Thanks for the inputs! I think I agree with you guys on the grade, XF. I don't see how it could possibly be AU without more luster.

Moe, you bring up a great point about the wing detail. I'm no expert in indian eagles, and they are really tough to grade. One thing I've noticed though is that the detail on the top right wing really isn't all that good of an indicator of the grade, even though it seems like everyone uses it as a reference. I've seen many in MS slabs that have flat detail on the upper wing, so I think there are strike issues on that part. It seems to me that remaining field luster would be the best indicator on higher grade indians, since that should be the area first exposed to wear on an incuse coin. The 1908 I posted has a ton of luster and detail, but the wing is flatter than this more heavily worn example.

I disagree with you on the mintmark location though as I think it varies. I wouldnt mind it being a philly though as it has a lower mintage in this case. Here is an example of an 11-s with mintmark position similar to mine.

I stand corrected my friend!

I can certainly see that your coin may have a reasonable chance of being an "S". (The example you posted has a much lower MM than my D. Maybe "S"'s are lower than "D"'s?)

I don't have any "S" IH Half Eagles's to compare with yours...

and that makes me sad.

I'll tell you what Moe. You take the "d" off of your 1908 and ship it to me, and I will take the "s" off of my 1911 and ship it to you. That way you will have a 1908-s, and I will have an 1911-D! According to my RedBook, that would be a Win win situation! :-)
