If you really window shop often as I do, you will find your dealers where ever you may surf for product via ebay or Craigslist, who are dropping the ball, or are sleeping when it comes to raising prices with silver as it goes up.... Some cases the dealer follows silver every day just as most of us do, but may perhaps not adjust price as they are trying to move a large piece of expensive silver and have it set high enough to turn a profit like say a one pound walking Liberty silver coin, last I had saved ended unsold at 720 "buy it now", with free shipping.... Some other cases I have noticed of silver coins not being marked up is with the Liberia 2/3 an oz silver coin, the opposite end of the spectrum. I have seen one dealer who is very established move their prices as should be, via coins that were once "buy it now" 40 to 45 bucks, are now listed as 50 to 60 dollars large, and that is a hefty chunk if you ask me, 60 bucks for 20 grams of silver, rare coin with a neat image or not.... Now then, I have other examples in my list, where you can still get these coins "buy it now", for 37 total in one case. So keep looking, the deals are out there to be found. Curious what other pieces you all may think is still a so called "smart buy".... Edited by Silverhawk74 04/10/2011 03:22 am

Modern commemoratives. I see Morgans and Peace dollars moving up in price according to silver value up in the 30 to 32 range. I just picked up some modern commems for 24.00. even though they are worth the same as far as silver value. These get overlooked quite a bit. I also just picked up a few more silver quarter proof sets for 26 dollars each at a local antiques shop, over 10 dollars under melt.

my dealer was telling me that with this economy and silver what it is, there are 3 (4) types of buyers/sellers: 1. people who in need of $$ and sell off their collection 2. people who made money from buying silver low and want to sell SOME of it off 3. people buying bullion silver becuase they think its going higher.. 4. collectors, (the least they've seen) those of us till able to afford collecting.
basically they said that not many people can afford to still collect coins when the bulk of them are now as expensive as silver allows. but this move in silver still hasnt affected the price of key/semi key date coins. I have been eyeballing a few low mintage higher grade halves and quarters and they have been the same price for about 6 months. uneffected by the silver swings.
this also allows me to start collecting barbers. most of the G4 barbers are now melt. also just about every MS63 roosevelt is about $3-5 at my shop.. thinking of going in and getting them all upgraded.. =D

None or all are a good buy depends on your belief in how silver will perform

But if you are on the buy side, I think ayejay1974 has a couple of great ideas with overlooked commens and silver proof sets.
And it also depends on how high you think the price will go. If you think $42 is the top, there's not enough meat left on the bone when considering your fully loaded acquisition costs, holding costs and sell side costs.

A lot of this depends on your time horizon and just why you are buying silver coins. I know that silver, like any other investment, can rise or fall at any time. The odds of silver falling substantially seem low to me at this time. Primarily, this has to do with the amount of paper money being created by the Fed and the effect that has on increasing the prices of all commodities, including the PMs. Silver has gone up a lot in the last couple of years but the other market forces that could push it back down seem extremely weak at this time. Because of this, I do not think that silver has topped yet. Even when it does top, it could still trade in a narrow sideways range for a considerable time. This does not look like a price spike to me, so I do not expect a rapid decrease in price for some time yet, if ever. As for myself, I am collecting ASEs and other silver coins for the long term. Any drops in price are just new opportunities to add to my collection.

All great info, and I will look into each of these ideas....
Ed, I agree 100% with your entire paragraph, speculation on what silver will do and all. Like you said, the factors that push silver prices down, just are to weak at the current place an time. I as well will look at any price drop as a chance to add more, kind of a half full type attitude, so people with our attitude and long term goals so to speak, can't really loose....

do not forget supply and demand. many reports say there silver is in short supply but because of the industrial uses, its demand is going through the roof! I personally do not think that there will be a drop for sometime. I agree, the factors listed above are solid reasons, but are weak for silver to be affected at this time. I think simply, that there is just not as much silver to go around as there use to.

The first person I bought silver from, was a fellow who has his own website and has been dealing in pm's since 79. When I asked him about three months back, if he thought silver was gonna go back up in price, (it was around 27 an oz then), and he stated the exact reasons for silver going up this year, that you listed SDcoin, more demand, than silver mined to meet supply basically, and I without a doubt think that is 100% accurate as well for being one of the other main factors for pushing silver up.... Here is his link below, and since he offers free shipping, and the option to send MO to avoid card transaction fee, his prices are very competitive, say 47 an some change for a walking liberty, which hey not bad for online purchase. Obviously most of you can get much better closer to spot deals at local dealer, but there is something to be said for convenience. George is his name, I and I need to bring him some more bus.... http://www.qualitypreciousmetals.co...rounds_1_oz/
