So, there I was this morning, looking at my meager collection of silver coins and Nevada gaming tokens when it occurred to me that the "In God We Trust" motto on coins and currency was over-due for an update. In view of all the church vs. state legal arguments that we've had as a nation, I vote that we change this to, "In Gold We Trust". Anyone else see it this way?

Good stuff Ed, that would not go over well here in the bible belt. I always say if God does not have a good sense of humor I am headed to hell, lol. I told my buddy that who really gets a kick out of stirring the pot so to speak on facebook, as he to was born where I live in east T.N., and he posted a picture of Jesus flipping a bird, and man did the "you know what" hit the fan. My aunt even sent me a message saying she was praying for his soul rof and that he would stand and be judged for that one day. He and her are not even friends on FB, she just saw it as I posted on it, lol. David said, he had several people delete him from friend list, other sent him prayers, others just cursed him. I was like geeez lighten up folks, life is to short to be so strait line serious all the time, and even if it does tick off God, that would be between him and the picture poster. I swear, humans kill me, always have always will....

From 1800-1955, In gold we trust.
What cost $1 in 1800 would cost $1.57 in 1955.
1/3 of 1% inflation per year.
From 1955-2010, In god wet rust.
What cost $1 in 1955 would cost $8.05 in 2010. 14.6% inflation per year.

I wouldn't mind going back to "Mind Your Business", but "In Gold We Trust" is good too.

I think they should change "In God we Trust" to the latinised version "In God we Trvst" just like on the Peace dollar and standing lib, oh, and while they're at it they should change "E Pluribus Unum" to "E Plvribvs Vnvm". The Latin versions look kind of cooler for some reason...

I have to think that God has a keen sense of humor, though. He created us, right? And He's probably been laughing over that ever since.

Well, speaking for myself, my soul belongs to God but my finances belong to whatever sustains me and my family, come what may. With the way that things are going these days, I just have to feel that some PMs on hand are a VERY good idea. If for no other reason, collecting coins, rounds, and bars is fun and interesting. If no disaster comes along, that will be great. I can always leave it to the kids and grand kids. Might save their bacon one day. If needed sooner than that, I will be mighty glad to have it available to me rather than a huge wad of paper that may or may not be worth much. I know that the people who frequent this site are WELL aware of the fact that paper money shrinks with time... at least in terms of buying power. I like to tell people a little story about two men from different times. 1000 years ago, a man could buy a 100 lb. sack of wheat to make bread and feed his family with 1/2 a gram of gold. Today, a man can still do that. Inflation? What inflation? As another fellow put it, if you have an ounce of gold, you have an ounce of gold. You do not wake up one day to find that it has shrunk to 0.8 ounce because of government incompetence. No, it is still *1* ounce. Given how paper money shrinks with time, usually due to over-printing, that ounce of gold is more likely to buy more goods and services tomorrow than it does today. Now, THAT is what I call an asset!

I can think of a lot of great uses for paper but unbacked paper money just isn't one of them. Other than that, I have a high regard for paper... every out-house should have some!

"In Gold We Trust"? I don't want to take the chance. Remember what happened after Moses lead his people out of Egypt. He was on Mount Sinai so long that they convinced Aaron to make a God of gold. Remember how upset Moses got? I think its a bad idea. I'm just sayin'

Not sure what the price of Gold was per ounce back then but imagine how much that thing would sell for with todays Gold prices. Motto on coins? I'm for deleting all writting on coins. Even eliminate the date and mint marks. The way things are now we are making China work to hard to counterfeit our coins.

14.6% inflation per year. I think something is wrong with your math. I don't have a compounded interest chart for 14% but for 12% over a 55 year period $1 would have to grow to $454 to break even. $1 to $8.05 is closer to 3%
