Soooo ... we had some fun recently grading my 1945-D Jefferson .... so in the spirit of sharing and additional practice here is coin #2 from my 11-coin PCGS war silver registry set.

Bizybackson nailed the 45-D ... wondering who can beat him/her on this one?

This is a 1943-P Jefferson in a problem free PCGS holder.

All input welcome and encouraged ... this is supposed to help support our collective learning of TPG views.

I'll reveal the PCGS grade in a bit ... so guess away ... extra credit for guesses supported by some level of analysis/observation.

The strike looks a bit different to me. It seems where the strike is usually the weakest is this coins' strong points...The reverse strike is very crisp by the steps, one of the strongest reverses I have ever seen(for a War Nickel), however the obverse seems a bit weak, and I think that would keep it from reaching an MS-67 or above... So with that said, the grade I give it is a strong MS-66, maybe even a plus or star designation(whatever they use anymore).

Excellent observation and the reason for this post .... education
for all of us.

Grading is not as simple of comparing any given coin to pictures in Photograde ... the subtle details of year and even mint come into play for any coin series.

We recognize that there are some years and mints that traditionally produced coins that were lacking detail ... this is not circulation wear but the way the coin left the minting press.

I would agree with you eric273 if this were a 2009 Jefferson ... but in this case I assure you this is a MS coin.

Sooo ... I have opinions from XF40 to MS68FS .... upstate is close but missing a key grading detail that applies the Jefferson series(hint).

Any others before I post the answer?
