I am going blind trying to find out the details on this nice coin that I got today.

This is such a common type and there is so many to look through.

I need some professional help.

First what I have found out already
Constantine II AE4 1.94g. 17mm Bronze
337-340 AD
Obv - CONSTANTINVSIVNNOBC
Rev - GLOR IAEXERC ITUS
I can not make out the all the characters in ex.
I see an S but the character on the right
It looks like there may even be something before the S, not sure

The only possibility that I can make out is that is Constantine II and that it comes from Trier with TRS* in exe, which would make it RIC VII Trier 545. I might have missed something in RIC but this one certainly fits the bill.

I also looks like TRS* to me. This is listed as an ancient imination (not official strike) in my reference.

WOW

If this is an imitation I would hope that someone would say so!

I will return it for a refund if it is not real.

I am trying to collect good grade coins which cost more money and therefore greater risk for loss if I do not catch mistakes quickly.

I have not found this exact design in wildwinds, but that is where I need your help.

Is it a real roman coin?

I used an online data base at http://www.catbikes.ch/coinstuff/coins-ric.htm Helvetica"s Identification Help Page. I also check ERIC I, which btw is available as a free download at dirty old coins books. (thanks Rasiel). Helvetica lists it as an imitation (unofficial issue) and I didn't find any listing for that mint mark in ERIC I or ERIC II.

This is where the definition of what is "real" gets murky.

Was it a coin used during Roman times? - yes.
Was it struck by somebody working in an official mint? -- possibly
Is it part of the official mint's output? -- probably not
It is collectable? Very much so.

It would be a very puritanical Roman Coin collector who didn't want to keep this.

hope that helps.

Bacchuus2

Well put.

I've been bumping into this same question and your description of it is quite clear and helpful.

Thanks

I AM VERY RELIEVED!

The place that I got this offers a full refund on items found to be not authentic.

I have great faith in there integrity thus far.

Thank You All for helping me understand,
I can be a little over cautious at times, but I am new at the ancient coins and would like to do this right.

I am now researching those suggestions for information sources.

Again Thank You all for your input.
Always looking to learn, that is one of the main attractions to coin collecting for me - The History.
