Hello Everyone,

My friend is a children's book writer, currently working on a book about coins. Can anyone offer any information or sources for interesting or rare uses for coins? Have you ever heard of coins being used in a very creative or quirky way?

For example, She has gathered some information on a man who actually made a jacket out of coins. She know this may seem a bit strange; but, she imagine avid coin collectors are probably the best source.

Looking forward to any interesting insight you might be able to provide!
Thanks!

A joke from inflation times:

- How to increase a value of a cent?
- Make two holes in it and sell it as a button for Two Cents.

It's a good example of an alternate use ;)

I met a coin dealer in NJ who has a type set of coins with holes in them, He showed me his favorites one of which had I think, four holes in it. He told me that during the civil war some troops would drill holes in large cents and sew them inside their jackets in strategic locations as a sort of bullet proof vest concept. If that is true, I think that qualifies as an unusual but practical use of coins.

He almost convinced me to start collecting holed coins, cheap coins each with a story...

I remember seeing a VW Beetle covered in pennies at the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum in San Antonio, TX. At least I think that's what it was...it was a loooong time ago :) But it was definitely a small car of some sort completely covered in pennies.
