So today at an antiques market, I came across an 1863 2 cent pattern, graded PR-64 by PCGS. It has the shield on it as opposed to Washington (I've read he's on some of the patterns). Unfortunately I don't know any more details about the pattern, but I was wondering what sort of prices a pattern like this could bring? The guy had it priced at $2K - which I obviously didn't have on me (nor would I dish that out without a lot of research), but it seemed like a good deal.

A quick check of similar Heritage results (not knowing the specific Judd pattern number, of course) indicates that might be a pretty darn good price. With that said, prices are all over the map, indicating there's a demand issue too - when you sell at the right time, you do well.

The pattern market has been strong, and that MAY be a good price. At times, I've had an antique mall contact the seller and then proceeded to negotiate a more favorable price. IMHO, an antique mall is not a good venue to sell pattern coins! I'd suggest that you check out the Heritage and Stacks' auction archives for starters. You might also check out population reports from PCGS, NGC and ANACS on this item. Hopefully, you can do all this before I locate that antique mall ... just kidding! ... maybe ... ;-)
